International Friendly: Azerbaijan vs Singapore Report [2-2]

Never say die attitude prove to be an elusive key for Singapore’s performance.

Reporting from Internet.

The home side which supposed to be played at Azerbaijan decided to play at Dubai according to FIFA. As early as the third minute of play, Singapore manage to get a corner from Azerbaijan. Shaiful Esah corner kick did not manage to create havoc as Azerbaijan defenders heads away the easily. Shaiful Esah cultured left has always provide a threat throughout the first half of the game. In the 15th minute, Aliyez of Azerbaijan manage to score as poor marking by Bennett runs Aliyez free, which all started from a good run from the right.

After the goal, Azerbaijan suddenly looks more dangerous attacking, attacking on the right more often to create trouble for the visitors. On the 20th minute, a great pass from Shahdan Sulaiman that fooled the midfielder, gets through to Fazrul Nawaz only to fall at the edge of the box. Shaiful Esah freekick disappoints fans as it goes straight into the wall. Azerbaijan counter attack quickly but Baihakki Khaizan manage to clear the ball back to Hassan Sunny.

Azerbaijan looking very dangerous from the right hand side as Azerbaijan poured men forward to double their lead. LionsXII off form striker manage to impress many as he managed to beat 2 players before registering a shot that was save tremendously by the custodian. In the 30th minute of play, a great vision from Shaiful Esah saw his defence-splitting pass get through two players to find Agu Casmir. With only the keeper to beat, Agu who has ready to shot finds himself offside. Singapore have a chance to get back into the game as Shaiful Esah whips a cross in the penalty box but it’s too far for Shahdan Sulaiman to chase it.

As soon as the second half kicks off, an error from Singapore right back Ruzaini Zainal almost cause Azerbaijan to scores. After a scramble of passes in the box, veteran defender Daniel Bennett managed to clear the ball to safety. Azerbaijan constant hassling on Singapore defences is worrying sign for the Raddy chargers. A loose ball founds Shahdan Sulaiman unmark and he’s not afraid to shot from distance as his thunderous shot goes to the top corner only to be tipped away superbly by the Azerbaijan goalkeeper.

The constants attacking treat from the Azerbaijan players prove dangerous as Baihakki Khaizan was judge to foul the Azerbaijan player at the edge of the box. Shukurov makes no mistake as his freekick curls past the reach of Hassan Sunny to make it 2-0 to Azerbaijan. Penalty to Singapore in the 70th minute as Qiu Li toppled in the penalty box. Shahril Ishak took the penalty twice, both of his strikes makes the keeper dive the wrong way as Singapore reduce the deficit.

In the dying moments of the game, Mustafic cross from the right founds Shahril Ishak, instead of shooting, he pass to Shahdan Sulaiman who make no mistake as he fired a powerful shot into the back of the net for the equaliser. That goal was literally the last kick of the game as Singapore managed to fight back from 2-0 down to draw with Azerbaijan the European country who ranks 39 places above Singapore. Full time score, Azerbaijan 2 Singapore 2.

Singapore next match will be against Iraq on Wednesday 29 February 2012. The game will be played in Doha, Qatar at Al Arabi Stadium. Kick off time @ 1645hrs (local time).

Brunei's DPMM flex their muscles

Source

SINGAPORE - Brunei outfit DPMM's stock rose last night when they defeated eight-time champions SAFFC 2-1 in the 2012 Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League at the Chua Chu Kang Stadium.

Goals from Basiru Osman in the 17th minute and Shah Razen 10 minutes from time silenced the home crowd. The Bruneians, who drew 2-2 with defending champions Tampines in their season opener last week in Bandar Seri Begawan, played like a side determined to settle unfinished business in the S-League.

They were challenging for the title the last time they featured in the competition in 2009, but were forced to pull out towards the end of the campaign after their national association were suspended by FIFA.

The Warriors, usually a tough proposition on their home turf, were a shadow of the side that won four straight titles from 2006 and their solitary goal by Tatsuro Inui in the 68th minute failed to lift the spirits of nearly 1,500 fans that turned up at the stadium.

With their second loss in as many starts to the season - SAFFC fell to Albirex Niigata in their season opener - the Warriors face a tough task to lift themselves for the uniform derby with arch-rivals Home United on March 4.

In the other match last night, Woodlands defeated Geylang 3-1 at the Woodlands Stadium.

Qiu Li’s Beep Test woes: I’ll quit football next year if I struggle to pass it

Source

On his fifth attempt this year, Qiu Li finally passed the dreaded Beep Test on Thursday morning at Woodlands Sports Hall after achieving a score of 13.2.

His score was the minimum passing rate for all S-League players before they can take the field for their respective clubs.

Speaking to Yahoo! Singapore, the Home United and Singapore striker expressed his relief but admits he may hang up his boots if his Beep Test woes continue next year.

He said while still catching his breath: "If there is still the Beep Test next year, I may stop playing altogether and go into coaching."

"The test is good for improving the level of a player's fitness. But to use it as a mandatory test to measure our fitness level is not right and accurate."

"There are players who achieve high scores for the Beep Test but could not even last a full match. On the contrary, I can last 90 minutes even if I fail. So who is the fitter one?"

The China-born player stressed that knowing when and where to run on the pitch matters more.

"It is all about knowing when and where to run on the pitch. And that is what matters.

"I am just happy that I have passed this time. If not I won't be able to play and get paid. I would have to sell my house and car then!"

The Beep Test gauges a player's fitness level by the number of 20-metre laps they can run. Players are required to reach the line at the end of the court before each "beep" goes off, while the time between each "beep" gradually increases along with the number of laps.

It is not the first time Li has struggled with the Beep Test.

In fact, it took the 30-year-old the same number of attempts last year to pass. But a leaner and fitter looking Li passed with flying colours this time around - a huge improvement from his previous score of 11.

The naturalised striker from China explained the reason behind his Beep Test woes.

He said: "It has been difficult for me to pass as I am still recovering from my knee operation. Moreover I have not been playing for over a month."

"I used to be able to pass with no problems before my injury but since then I have struggled to pass," added Qiu, who was named in the Lions squad to face Iraq in their upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier match.

Cheering Qiu from the sidelines was Singapore national team fitness coach Aleksandar Bozenko.

When quizzed on the Beep Test, Bozenko who is also known as Sasha, was coy in his response but believes it is something every player — regardless of their statuses — must go through.

He said: "It is a regulation that all players, whether they are star players or not, must follow. I have no say in whether the Beep Test should or should not be implemented. That is up to the authorities.

"For me, I have my own set of fitness tests for my players during training."

Prime League players, whose passing score is 12.8, made up the majority of those present at the Woodlands Sports Hall and among them was Balestier Khalsa's Sim Teck Yi.

It was the 20-year-old's third attempt at the Beep Test this year and he is set for another trip back after falling short with a score of 11.7.

Looking visibly disappointed, the second-year Computer Engineering student at Singapore Polytechnic said he feels demoralised by the Beep Test and may give up on football to concentrate on his studies.

"It is a really sickening feeling to be coming back again and again. If I can't pass I will just quit football and focus on my studies.

"While I can see the reason behind the Beep Test, I have also seen many young and talented footballers give up on their footballing career simply because they can't pass."

"It is such a waste."

What do YOU think about the Beep Test? Is it necessary for S-League players to go through it?

Adidas to sponsor football kit for Singapore Sports School

Source

The Singapore Sports School and leading sports brand adidas have entered a partnership to kit the school's football academy under-13 to 16 teams.

It includes a full sponsorship of the Sports School's 18 strong under-15 team, who will wear the latest adizero F50 boots with the adidas miCoach SPEED_CELL, a micro chip that allows analysis of the player's statistics such as distance covered during a match, as well as speed and stride rates.

12 Sports School student athletes were also sponsored in equipment.

"The Singapore Sports School is constantly exploring the application of technology into both the training and competition environments," said the Sports School's deputy director of sports John Limna.

"We look forward to a collaboration between adidas and the Sports School Football Academy and Performance Enhancement Institute staff to maximise the potential of this technology for the benefit of our student-athletes."

adidas Sports Performance and Sports Style Marketing director Amit Das Gupta added: "It has always been part of our core belief that sports should be a part of everyone's lifestyle ... And we remain committed in driving this, especially among Singapore's youth."

LionsXII vital to national team, says Avramovic Serb says players will get enough chances to prove themselves at the national level

Source

SINGAPORE - With injuries blighting his start to the year, Agu Casmir has yet to set the Malaysian Super League (MSL) alight, even losing his spot in the LionsXII first XI.

But the 27-year-old's surprise inclusion in Radojko Avramovic's 25-man Singapore squad for their final Group A World Cup qualifying fixture against Iraq is perhaps proof of the Serb's vow to give opportunities to all players to shine, and also of the importance of the LionsXII project to the national team.

Speaking to Today before he revealed his selection on Monday, Avramovic said: "The players selected for the LionsXII are there because they are the core of the national team, the aim was to have them train together as a group and give them the opportunity to prove themselves," the 62-year-old Serb said.

"I played a part in selecting the players and coach for LionsXII, and we've had a few meetings discussing the things happening in their competition, but that's all.

"I don't interfere in the daily running of the team, that's up to the head coach (V Sundramoorthy)."

Comparisons have been drawn between the LionsXII and Malaysian counterparts Harimau Muda, who now play in the S-League. Several in the fraternity have credited the development system in Malaysian age-group teams for their recent regional success that has seen them win the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup as well as back-to-back SEA Games (under-23) titles in 2009 and 2011.

"They've kept their team training and playing together for years and, unfortunately, that's not a model we can follow. At the moment, the Courts Young Lions and LionsXII present the only possibility of player development for the national team," said Avramovic.

"Young Lions is the first step (for a player to show if he has national team potential) and then he will take the second step into the LionsXII team. If we can set that in order, I don't think the national team will have a problem," added Avramovic, who will also pay close attention to what he believes are much improved clubs in the S-League.

Avramovic's biggest task this year is the AFF Suzuki Cup, and there are suggestions he may call time on his nine-year stint as national coach when his contract expires at the end of 2012.

But he said: "Problems exist no matter who the coach is ... but this year my only aim is the Suzuki Cup, I'm not thinking about the personal side of things, how long I will stay, or who will be coach after me.

"There will be no sentimentality when I select players this year, there will be opportunities for players to prove themselves, but only the best will go to the Suzuki Cup to compete, where we aim to play in the final."

LionsXII: Don't take anything away from us Despite match-fixing allegations, LionsXII focused on the job at hand

Source

SINGAPORE - After a stuttering start to their Malaysian Super League (MSL) campaign, V Sundramoorthy's LionsXII are beginning to find their groove.

Their football has been entertaining, the goals are now flowing and their consequent climb up the table has seen them just three points off the pace in fourth spot.

But recent revelations of suspicion that LionsXII matches have been fixed by Malaysian clubs have taken some gloss off the team's three-match unbeaten run.

The New Paper reported yesterday that at least one LionsXII game was "a confirmed fix".

"If (the allegations) are true, it is very disappointing but we cannot control things outside of our team," LionsXII midfielder Isa Halim told Today.

"But whatever the case may be, we should not take anything away from the performances of the boys. Every single one of them has worked hard to get into the first XI, and now we're starting to play flowing attacking football."

Since their 1-0 loss to Terengganu at home on Jan 28, the LionsXII have gone on to draw with Selangor (1-1) before turning in a scintillating attacking performance to beat Malaysia Cup champions Negeri Sembilan 3-1 last Saturday.

The team returned from Perak yesterday beaming with another victory in the bag, with skipper Shahril Ishak scoring a brace in a hard-fought 2-1 win.

"I don't think there was anything suspicious about the games that we have played. They were all tough games, even the ones we won were not easy," said Shahril, who has scored five goals so far.

"The Malaysian teams we've played have all been very aggressive on the pitch, and especially when we've played at away grounds, they've always come at us. But having said that, all teams have their off-days, even us.

"I don't think there's anything fishy."

Both the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and the Corrupt Practices Investigations Bureau (CPIB) have made their zero-tolerance stance clear even before the MSL season kicked off in January, and neither Isa nor Shahril, both stand-out performers in the campaign so far, believes any of their team-mates would get embroiled in match-fixing.

"We know the CPIB's no-nonsense approach and how they'll hunt down anyone suspected of it. For us players, all we want to do is live the dream of playing in front of packed stadiums in a competition that has much historical meaning for us," said Isa.

Shahril called for the LionsXII to focus on their own football.

"Now we should leave it to the authorities to do their job, while we keep on doing ours well. The CPIB spoke to us before the season, we know the consequences and I firmly believe our boys are clean," he said.

"All we need to do is focus on playing good football in all the competitions."

Let's join hands to tackle match-fixing, FAM tells FAS

Source

SINGAPORE - The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) is to ask the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) and the police to join their Malaysian counterparts in the fight against match-fixing.

The suggestion had been put forward by Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) general-secretary Azzudin Ahmad during his visit to Singapore last week for the opening 2012 Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League match between Gombak United and Malaysia's Harimau Muda at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

"When I was there in Singapore for the S-League opener, I suggested to the FAS officials they should get their anti-corruption team and police to work together with our Malaysian counterparts to tackle the match-fixing menace," Azzudin told Today in a phone interview from Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

"Naturally, the FAS officials are keen on the proposal because it's for the good of football," Azzudin added. "The idea is to get the two enforcement agencies from both countries to sit together, share information and see how they can fight match-fixing.

"I would be following up on the proposal with an official letter from FAM to my Singapore counterpart."

To tackle match-fixing, the FAM has formed the Integrity and Co-ordinating Committee to monitor the situation.

Azzudin revealed that heading the new committee is Osman Bakar, a 61-year-old retired assistant commissioner and former player with Penang.

He is better known as part of the famous Bakar brothers, a footballing family from Penang whose claim to fame included his late brothers, Ali and Isa, both of whom were former Malaysian internationals.

Eldest brother Ali died in Singapore aged 56 during a friendly in 2003 between the ex-Malaysian internationals against their Singapore counterparts at the Tampines Stadium.

Isa, part of the Penang side which lost 3-2 to Singapore in the 1977 Malaysia Cup final, passed away two years ago of illness.

"Osman is the right choice to head the committee because he was also part of the police team which conducted investigations and the subsequent arrest and banishment of more than 150 footballers in the crackdown of 1994," said Azzudin.

"But it is important that there must be co-operation from the enforcement agencies from both countries if we are to fight match-fixing more effectively, especially as Singapore are back in Malaysian football with the participation of the LionsXII in the Malaysian Super League."

Firdaus fined S$10,000

Source

Midfielder Firdaus Kasman was fined S$10,000 yesterday for consuming alcohol at a birthday outing on Feb 4.

The 24-year-old was deemed to have breached the Football Association of Singapore's (FAS) Code of Conduct and Professional Ethics.

But the FAS have confirmed his subsequent suspension, which saw him miss the LionsXII's last three Malaysian Super League matches, has been lifted, meaning he is available for the team's first-round Malaysian FA Cup clash against Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) this Saturday.

Apart from the hefty fine, Firdaus will also speak on the dangers of violating the Code of Conduct to his LionsXII team-mates, the Courts Young Lions and National Football Academy (NFA) age-group teams.

In a statement, Firdaus expressed remorse and regret, and apologised to the FAS, his coaches and team-mates, as well as his family and fans.

Describing it as a "heavy punishment", he also thanked the FAS disciplinary committee for giving him another chance by not terminating his LionsXII contract. "I shall constantly remind myself and the other players of the terms of the Code of Conduct which we had promised to comply with when we signed it," said Firdaus. "My immediate priority now is to resume training and earn back a place in the LionsXII team."

Firdaus had consumed alcohol on Feb 4 and was helped by an un-named friend to the toilet to vomit. However, his friend allegedly picked up a lady's handbag thinking it belonged to Firdaus' fiancee, and they were questioned by the police. As a result, Firdaus missed training the next day.

However, the three-man FAS disciplinary committee chaired by Lim Kia Tong said mitigating factors in the LionsXII midfielder's favour was the remorse and regret he showed and his clean disciplinary record.

Firdaus is also assisting the police in investigations over the alleged theft on Feb 4.

LionsXII roar in Perak Skipper Shahril the hero once again as Sundram's men march on

Source

IPOH - A goal in each half by skipper Shahril Ishak earned the LionsXII a stirring victory over Perak last night as the Singapore outfit continued their winning ways in the Malaysian Super League (MSL).

The 2-1 win was the second on the road for the LionsXII and ended Perak's unbeaten home record this season.

The win pushed the LionsXII level with third-placed Terengganu on 14 points, just three behind table-toppers Kelantan, but coach V Sundramoorthy refused to be drawn on whether his team are now legitimate title contenders.

"I'm delighted with the win. We will do our best and prepare well for every game but most importantly we must have enough time to prepare the boys," said Sundram after the game.

"I'm very delighted that Shahril is pulling the team forward but Hariss, Baihakki and Juma'at did well, while the others also worked their socks off."

Facing a team that entered the game in second place in the standings and backed by a vociferous 17,000-strong home crowd, including Perak's Sultan Azlan Shah, the LionsXII refused to be cowed, stringing together counter-attacks with Hariss Harun combining well with Juma'at Jantan in the heart of the midfield.

The trio of Shahdan Sulaiman, Irwan Shah and skipper Shahril Ishak also provided good support for marauding lone striker Sufian Anuar.

The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Irwan Shah's cross was expertly headed back across goal by Sufian for Shahril to hook in past Perak goalkeeper Nastril Nourdin.

It was all Perak after the break and the hosts earned a penalty when Lazar Popovic was brought down needlessly in the box by Safuwan Baharudin.

Firecrackers went off in the stands and flares were set off by the Silver State ultras and the game was delayed for five minutes after LionsXII goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud complained of being distracted by a laser pointer.

After the fans were issued a warning through the PA system, Michal Kubala stepped up to blast the ball home.

Credit to the LionsXII, they never let their heads drop, with midfield strongman Hariss leading the recovery. Reward came in the 74th minute with Shahril rising high to head home a delicious Shaiful Esah cross to continue his rich vein of form, with five goals from three matches.

Said a disappointed Perak coach, Norizan Bakar, after the game: "I think we did everything we could except for the two defensive errors that led to the LionsXII goals.

The MSL will now take a two-week break to accommodate World Cup qualifiers and the preliminary rounds of the Malaysian FA Cup, with the LionsXII set to meet UiTM this Saturday in the latter competition.

ASEAN final is Avramovic's target Doors open for Singapore squad as Serb coach works on battleplan for AFF Suzuki Cup

Source

SINGAPORE - He remembers it clearly, that Feb 4 night in Bangkok in 2007, his finest moment as coach of Singapore.

It was not the bullet from Khairul Amri's right boot that Radojko Avramovic remembers most fondly, even if it was the goal that saw Singapore defend its ASEAN crown.

What continues to stand out in Avramovic's mind was the dogged determination his men displayed protecting their goal after Amri's equaliser, allowing them to draw 1-1 on the night and beat Thailand 3-2 on aggregate to claim their second successive ASEAN Football Championship.

It was a professional backs-against-the-wall performance, and the Serb is plotting another such campaign for his Lions this year, starting in nine days in Doha.

The Lions face Azerbaijan in a friendly (Feb 24) before taking on Iraq (Feb 29) in their final Group A third round World Cup qualifier, and with Singapore already out of contention, those two games will be played with December's AFF Suzuki Cup in mind.

Speaking to Today, Avramovic, 62, said yesterday: "No one expected us to beat Thailand, and after Amri's goal, the team showed desire, professionalism and a will to win against the odds.

"And that was the best satisfaction for all the work done."

After two poor ASEAN campaigns in 2008 and 2010, few will rate Singapore this time out. Avramovic believes that will play into their hands.

"Our target is to qualify for the final, and it's easier when you are not the favourites. No one expected much of Vietnam (2008) and Malaysia (2010), and they won. This time, no one expects us to win."

Avramovic will pull out the stops for Singapore to regain their ASEAN title.

Before he announces his final squad, the door will be thrown open to all players regardless of age.

A programme has been drawn up for to get the Lions in prime shape by the end of the year.

"The core of the team will come from the players in the LionsXII squad, but there's no sentimentality, the best players will be selected and the door is open for everyone," he said.

"I will give a chance to young players, but if they don't take their chance, I will call older players as long as they are in the right shape and have the right attitude."

The Serb has a schedule in place to get his Lions in top form by the time the tournament comes around.

"We will use dates set aside by FIFA for internationals to play matches.

"However, the biggest difference is that this year, we will have the team together for 15 days just before the tournament," said Avramovic, who revealed that he only had two days with his full squad before leaving for the previous two tournaments.

Said Avramovic: "At the moment, our only target for the year is the Suzuki Cup. We have several players from that 2007 team still playing and matured players too. Every player will get opportunities to prove that they belong in the team."

Sufian set to get the nod, again Confidence high among LionsXII but Sundram warns Perak will not be a stroll in the park

MALAYSIAN SUPER LEAGUE 2012

Perak vs LionsXII

IPOH - Sufian Anuar will be in the LionsXII starting line-up when the Singapore team take on Perak in the Malaysian Super League (MSL) here tonight.

Sufian inspired the side in their 3-1 win over reigning Malaysia Cup champions Negeri Sembilan on Saturday at the Jalan Besar Stadium and coach V Sundramoorthy confirmed that the 25-year-old will operate as the lone striker once again at the Perak Stadium.

Speaking here yesterday, Sundram said: "He has put himself in the starting line-up after his performance against Negeri Sembilan and it's up to him to keep himself there.

"But he needs to stay composed and not get carried away by the one performance he has delivered,"

The foul weather here yesterday played havoc with the two teams' training sessions.

Perak's session was cut short and the LionsXII, understrength yesterday, went through their workout in a slight drizzle.

Due to National Service commitments, Hariss Harun, Safuwan Baharudin, Shakir Hamzah, Yasir Hanapi and Khairul Nizam are all expected to arrive here today.

With midfield hardman Isa Halim suspended, Hariss Harun will partner Shahdan Sulaiman in the heart of the engine room.

Confidence has been high in the camp since the stylish win on Saturday, with the team moving into fourth place in the standings six points behind league leaders Kelantan.

Sundram has spent some time trying to ensure his men don't get carried away.

"We should not be too over-confident following the win over Negeri Sembilan.

"It's always a different game when you are playing away and with a full stadium expected tomorrow, it will be a tough match.

"So we must be focused and very disciplined," he said.

Midfield anchor Isa, who has been outstanding so far in the LionsXII MSL campaign, will be missed.

Perak, who are second, four points ahead of the LionsXII, will be up for the game and coach Norizan Bakar said: "As hosts, we do not want to lose in front of our fans, despite this being our fourth match in 10 days.

"But we are aware the LionsXII are a steady and confident team and I'll be relying on my senior players to guide the younger ones through this tough encounter."

As for Perak assistant manager Ahmad Shahrul Azhar Sofian, playing the LionsXII will give his team greater motivation.

"Apart from representing the state, the players feel they are also flying the flag for the nation.

"That itself has given this match an extra buzz and I'm sure the fans will turn out in droves for tomorrow's match as it has been a long time since a Singapore team played here."

The Perak Stadium can hold 42,500 people and locals Today spoke to are already predicting that around 10,000 fans will turn up to back their favourites despite it being a mid-week fixture.

LionsXII probable starting line-up:

Izwan Mahbud, Juma'at Jantan, Baihakki Khaizan, Safuwan Baharudin, Shaiful Esah, Hariss Harun, Yasir Hanapi, Shahril Ishak, Shahdan Sulaiman, Irwan Shah, Sufian Anuar

DPMM FC drop points

Source

What should have been a fairy tale finish ended in frustration for DPMM FC last night.

Playing their first competitive match since September,2009, DPMM FC let in a aheat-wrenching injury time goal to let S-League title-holders Tampines steal a 2-2 draw.

Midfielder Jamil Ali's lob over Wardun Yussof was a sobering sight for the healthy crowd at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, all eager to watch their team's S-League season opener.

With three corners in their first two minutes,DPMM FC didn't waste any time getting their fans on the edge of their seats and got in front after an Osman Basiru striker in the 38th minute.

Though Fahrudin Mustafic would equalise early in the second half, an error by Tapines shot-stopper Sasa dreven saw Ivan Jerkovic hand the hosts the 2-1 lead in the 69th minute- only for jamil to spoil the party.

Frustrated fans might have complained that Vjeran Simunic's decision to substitute two defenders in the last 10 minutes backfired, but the coach stuck to his guns.

"We changed them (Sairol Sahari and Shahrulrizal Abd Rahman) because they were injured," said the Croatian.

"We could win ... No, we deserved to win.We showed we're a good team and that Singapore must care about us.

We deserved the three points, but becuase of the beep test qualification, we are without key players Yusof Salleh and midfielder Abang Norsuhilmy Taha," he said referring to the mandatory fitness test that several players have been unable to pass.

Osman netted the opener when he pounced on defender Tales Ricarte dos Santos's shot that rebounded off the crossbar after a cornerkick from Azwan Salleh.

Not only was dos Santos a monster in the air, the Brazilian also kept a tight leash on Aleksander Duric, though the veteran striker was able to deliver a header which was easily saved by Wardun in the 44th minute and then saw Davor Piskor's shot sail wide of the left post a minute later.

But there was no denying Tampines in the 48th minute when Mustafic riffled a low freekick poast Wardun's left after Jerkovic had fouled Jamil outside the box.

DPMM FC captain Rosmin Khamis was a beast in the centre of the park with his ball-winning abilities and cool head - working well with his Croatian central midfield partner Jerkovic.

But overall, the team failed to create space and work the ball around a wellorganised Tampines back-line marshalled by mustafic.

Less than six yards out, Rodrigo Gral should have made it 2-1 to DPMM after receiving a Shahrazen Saidpass in the 62nd minute. But Dreven, who had a fine game in between the sticks, came off his line to save from close-range.

Basiru passed the ball to jerkovic, and with space and time, fired a 25-yard cannonball which his compatriot had a hand on but could not hold on to.

As opposed to Gral, Basiru was a menace throughout the game with his willingness to run at defenders and had a penalty claim dismissed in the 2nd minute.

Dos Santos proved his worth once again in the 77th minute with a goal-line clearance, but failing to keep the ball, the three points was always in threat.

When jamil took advantage of some confusion in the box - after Sairol and Shahrulrizal's substitutes, Suhaime Yusof might not have known who to mark- there was nothing Simunic could do but just cover his face and turn away.

Phoenix's Daniel in Singapore club talks

Phoenix
ROSS GIBLIN/Fairfax NZ
SINGAPORE OFFER: Daniel comes off his three year contract with the Phoenix at the end of A league season.

Brazilian midfielder Daniel might be waving goodbye to the Phoenix.

The popular player has flown out today for talks with a Singapore club.

A Phoenix club spokesman said Daniel approached club coach Ricki Herbert yesterday asking for a clearance to explore the Singapore offer.

''He's gone to Singapore today to have a look at the situation and will be back Wednesday,'' the Phoenix spokesman said.

''After that the club will discuss with him where things stand.

''Daniel asked Ricki if he could have a look and Ricki said 'certainly'. He is due back Wednesday because we leave Thursday (to play league leaders Central Coast).''

Daniel comes off his three year contract with the Phoenix at the end of A league season.

He is one of the club's highest paid players but is used largely as a substitute and if he stays is almost certainly in line for a reduced contract.

He has started eight of the Phoenix's 21 A-League matches this season.

Daniel, 32, was signed by Herbert in 2007. He was granted New Zealand citizenship in 2008. He made his 100th appearance for the Phoenix in the game against Newcastle Jets on January of this year.

Former keeper becomes LionsXII's unlikely hero

LionsXII 3 Negeri Sembilan 1

SINGAPORE - It has taken a while, but V Sundramoorthy may have finally stumbled upon an attacking partnership that works.

The LionsXII romped to a 3-1 victory over defending Malaysia Cup champions Negeri Sembilan at the Jalan Besar Stadium last night, in what was surely their best performance of the season so far.

With his side often criticised for being less than clinical in front of goal, Sundram turned to a former goalkeeper to solve his team's goalscoring woes, and how the move paid off.

The coach dropped regular striker Agu Casmir and placed his faith in Sufian Anuar, a goalkeeper-turned-forward who marked his first start by chipping in with two assists.

"He's shown a lot of fire in training, sometimes overdoing it and hurting his team-mates, but it looked like I made the right decision in starting him," Sundram said.

"This was our best performance of the season so far, but it's only seven games old and we should get better."

Former Singapore international R Suriamurthi was beaming when he spoke of Sufian, who was previously a second-choice goalkeeper in the national under-16 side.

"He was strong and determined then, but didn't get a chance to play nor showed any signs of being a forward, but he did really well.

"The way he chases every ball and fights from the front, it makes it easier for everyone to play, inspires them even," said Suria.

"Not since (former Singapore captain) Noh Alam Shah have we seen a forward play like that. I think he's done enough to retain his spot in the first XI."

Shahril Ishak broke the deadlock with a well taken penalty after Shahurain Abu Samah was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box in the 31st minute.

Then up stepped Sufian with a slick backheel, a move that would have done Sundram proud, to lay the ball in the path of Shahdan Sulaiman to double the lead in the 50th minute.

The 24-year-old Sufian was again in the thick of the action 10 minutes later, sending a peach of a low cross for Shahril to bag his second goal of the night.

Said Sufian: "I was a reserve player before and I want to give of my best and prove that I am one of the best."

And in the eyes of his teammates, Sufian may have just done enough.

Baihakki Khaizan was disconsolate after his team's showing in Kuala Lumpur last week, but last night he was beaming.

"We have been trying to fit all the pieces together for a while now, and I think (last night) the jigsaw puzzle looks like it's complete," he told Today.

Sundram will be forced to tinker with the team yet again when they take on high-flying Perak on Tuesday, with Khairul Amri still out injured and Isa Halim having to miss that encounter after picking up his third yellow card of the season. But the scintillating attacking performance last night, has at least sent a message to the rest of Malaysia that despite a tepid start, the LionsXII can play good football.

"This is definitely the football we want to play," said Sundram. "A win before facing Perak is the best thing for the team - their morale and confidence have been boosted."

LionsXII beat defending champions Negeri Sembilan 3-1

Source

By Sanjay Nair

The LionsXII picked up their most impressive win to date, beating Negeri Sembilan 3-1 in a Malaysian Super League tie at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday evening.

It was a thoroughly deserved three points for the hosts, who pummelled the defending Malaysia Cup champions from the kick-off. Captain Shahril Ishak and forward Sufian Anuar - making his first start - fluffed opportunities to break the deadlock early on.

But Shahril was not to be denied, converting a penalty on the half-hour mark after Negeri defender Shahurain Abu Samah handled a cross in the penalty box.

Midfielder Shahdan Sulaiman then doubled the lead in the 49th minute, capping off a slick give-and-go with Sufian to slot home from 10m out.

Shahril completed the rout on the hour mark, finishing with aplomb after Sufian's cut-back across the penalty box. Defender Firdaus Azizul bagged a consolation goal for the visitors with the final kick of the game.

With their victory, the LionsXII have picked up 11 points from seven matches. They next face Perak in Ipoh on Tuesday.

Not many pundits and critics thought the LionsXII will get anything from their match against Negeri Sembilan, who have proved to be a hard team to beat in recent Malaysian Super League season.

But the LionsXII obviously paid no attention to the script, putting up their best performance of the season to secure all three points with a superb 3-1 win.

The Lions started the match at a blistering pace.

Safuan Anuar, who was a shock replacement for Agu Casmir, was a nuisance upfront, fouling the Negeri goalkeeper twice in the first ten minutes.

It was all uphill for the LionsXII from then , with Shahril Ishak, Safuan and Shahdan Sulaiman combining well to put the Negeri defence under immense pressure.

Unfortunately, they were let down by poor finishing as the Negeri custodian was hardly tested in the first half.

But the LionsXII got their break around the half hour mark when a Negeri defender handled the ball in the area. The referee awarded the home side a penalty without any hesitation.

Captain Shahril stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake from the spot to give his lead a valuable lead.

The LionsXII were lucky not to be reduced to ten men just before half-time as Baihakki Khaizan knocked down the Negeri goalkeeper but was not issued a second yellow card, much to the anger of the Negeri players and fans.

But their agony was made worse in the second half when Shahdan Sulaiman doubled the LionsXII’s lead.

The midfielder finished off an excellent passing move involving him, Shahril Ishak and Safuan Anuar and latched on to Safuan’s brilliant back-heel to send the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

The LionsXII then sealed the points on the hour mark after Safuan once tore the Negeri defence apart with his strength and squared a pass to Shahril Ishak to tap in his second goal of the night.

LionsXII coach then started resting his big-name players with Yasir Hanapi and Agu Casmir coming on for Shahdan Sulaiman and Shahril Ishak respectively.

The crowd however, were not happy about Agu’s introduction and starting booing the minute he stepped on the field.

Negeri poured men forward after that in an effort to get a consolation goal but try as they might, they could not find a way past the LionsXII defence and instead, left gaping holes in the back.

He huffed and he puffed, but Negeri Sembilan striker Effa could not blow the LionsXII defence down. TODAY POOL PHOTO

Sufian almost made them pay for that but his acrobatic effort in the 85th minute, but missed the mark by mere inches.

Negeri had a chance to salvage some pride in the dying minutes by Effa could not connect with a pass from his team-mate and the visitors’ bext chance of the match went begging.

But they did get their consolation goal with the last kick of the game, while LionsXII midfielder Isa Halim got a yellow card for handling the ball on the line in the build up to the goal.

When the final whistle blew, the Jalan Besar stadium erupted and fans gave the LionsXII the standing ovation they truly deserved.

Some cheer for ex-Etoile players

Source

SINGAPORE - The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) Labour Court has given Etoile FC seven days to pay its players salaries still owed to them.

A hearing took place at the MOM's Havelock Road headquarters yesterday, after the club's former employees submitted complaints against the 2010 S-League champion for unpaid salaries.

The MOM ruled that Etoile has a week from yesterday to pay seven former Etoile players and ex-assistant coach David Maubon up to S$7,400 each in unpaid salaries, stretching from November last year to January.

If Etoile does not make payment by the stipulated date, a writ of seizure and sale could be ordered. While the club does not have physical assets, its former players could agree on repayment by instalments or launch a civil suit against the French club.

The troubled club pulled out of this year's S-League competition due to financial issues and had said it would concentrate on youth development while trying to get back on an even keel.

Yesterday, club chairman Hicham Moudden did not refer to the deadline when he promised that all salaries will be fully paid within the next few months, and all debts cleared.

Mr Moudden said: "Today if we can't find a solution between the different parties involved, as a responsible businessman who has been running businesses for 16 years and has always paid my bills, I will clear the debts under my chairmanship within the next three months, if it requires me to inject personal money as I already have done.

"It has been a learning experience for me, I have done my duty and I would like to thank all the people who have supported me and the team in this adventure. It all started from a kid who loved football and now doesn't want to go to the stadium any more."

Harimau Muda overshadow LionsXII

2012 Malaysian Super League

LionsXII vs Negeri Sembilan

SINGAPORE - V Sundramoorthy's LionsXII side have already played six Malaysian Super League (MSL) games. While no one can fault their work ethic, the brand of football displayed by the Singapore team has hardly set competition alight.

Often uninspired in attack, with their passing game very much a work-in-progress, the LionsXII face a high-flying Negeri Sembilan side at the Jalan Besar Stadium tonight.

Negeri are fourth in the MSL standings, three points ahead of Sundram's outfit and just four behind leaders Perak.

While the LionsXII are trying to find their feet in the MSL, the Harimau Muda, the Malaysian development squad that have come the other way, have already taken the S-League by storm.

The young Malaysian players were a delight to watch in their 2-0 win over Gombak United in their S-League opener on Thursday. Highly-skilled, full of pace and running Ong Kim Swee's side employed a slick pass-and-move game that won them rave reviews, and comparisons have already been made with the LionsXII.

Sundram caught the Harimau Muda in action and said yesterday: "That team have talented players, and their understanding and teamwork comes from having played together for a long time. We have equally talented ones in our team, but we were formed just one month before the January kickoff and we need time to get there.

"This first year is an experimental year for us, where we compete, gain exposure and try to win games. We should try to win things in our second and third year."

Malaysia's Harimau Muda is the country's under-23 team and they have had multiple stints playing in the Slovakian league over the last few years. Coach Ong's players are full-time footballers, most of them living and training together at the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) Kelana Jaya headquarters.

While Sundram pointed to the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) National Football Academy sides and the Singapore Sports School teams as good developmental platforms for future footballers, he insisted the LionsXII have already shown some improvement.

He said: "We need to use the ball better in the attacking third of the pitch, but our performances against Sabah and Selangor spoke volumes about the character of the team.

"The senior players are taking more control, with younger ones like Madhu Mohana, Shakir Hamzah and Raihan Rahman coming along very nicely.

"This is our test year, we will get better with time, and with time, our understanding and teamwork will also get better."

10 per cent of tickets are still available for tonight's match and booths at Jalan Besar Stadium's North gate will open at 5pm. The match will also be shown "live" on MediaCorp Channel 5 from 7.30pm.

Probable LionsXII first XI:

Izwan Mahbud, Madhu Mohana, Baihakki Khaizan, Hariss Harun, Shaiful Esah, Juma'at Jantan, Isa Halim, Shahdan Sulaiman, Irwan Shah, Shahril Ishak, Sufian Anuar

Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League 2012

Home United 0 Balestier Khalsa 0

SINGAPORE - The look on Home United coach Lee Lim Saeng said it all. Hardly in his seat at the dugout during his team's opening encounter with visiting Balestier Khalsa in the 2012 Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League last night, Lim spent most of his time barking orders at his players as they struggled to find any sort of rhythm in the drab 0-0 draw at Bishan Stadium.

Asked to assess the match, Lee admitted it was poor.

"I wanted to get the three points tonight, that's why I am disappointed. We lacked a midfield tonight, but we will get better," said Lee. "We have another match and then we'll get a break, that'll give us more time to get the team to play better together."

Admittedly, Home were missing midfield dynamo Shi Jiayi through suspension. With striker Qiu Li still not fully fit and attacking midfielder John Wilkinson hamstrung by an International Transfer Certificate that has yet to arrive, the Protectors were missing some of their big guns.

Still, Home, billed as title favourites, had Frederic Mendy and fellow Frenchman Franklin Anzite in their line-up last night, along with Shotaro Ihata, Albirex Niigata's former top goalscorer.

But none of them could get a grip on the game.

Balestier coach Darren Stewart was candid in his assessment of the match.

"Maybe the quality of the play was not outstanding, with a bit of wind blowing around and the new ball making it tough, but it was a gutsy performance by my team," said Stewart. "There won't be many teams that will come here and get away with a point."

For the watching fans, officially tallied at 1,354, it was a poor advertisement for S-League Version 2.0, although the match at Jurong East Stadium could have made up for it, with Albirex pipping SAFFC 3-2.

Home fans would have expected to be entertained by a team that fought tooth-and-nail with Tampines Rovers for the title last season, but were instead served up misplaced passes aplenty, few genuine goalscoring chances, and a game that failed to flow.

Balestier Khalsa vice-chairman S Thavaneson insisted performances would get better, when he said: "It was an even game, and perhaps because it was the first game, the players were more cagey and the flamboyance and adventure is still not there.

"Give it two or three more games and you'll really start to see what these boys can do."

S-League's overseas broadcasts a good thing Gombak United and Harimau Muda coaches say the broadcasts will help football in the region

Source

SINGAPORE - A strong turnout is expected for tonight's opening 2012 Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League clash between Gombak United and Malaysia's Harimau Muda at the 7,500-seat Jalan Besar Stadium.

Also, the match will be watched by many more on TV in Malaysia and Brunei as well, the first time that the S-League will be broadcast overseas.

Yesterday, the S-League announced a one-year partnership with official broadcaster StarHub and official production partner ESPN STAR Sports to broadcast 30 "live" matches, as well as a weekly highlights show on ESPN STAR Sports across 12 countries, and StarHub.

And the occasion is not lost on Harimau Muda head coach Ong Kim Swee and his Gombak counterpart K Balagumaran.

Speaking to Today, both recognised the significance of being part of that milestone.

"It's definitely good for football in this region, not just Singapore and Malaysia," said Ong, who was also briefed about the proposed pre-match shows by S-League CEO Lim Chin yesterday.

"It shows both countries (Singapore and Malaysia) are working together for the development of the game. The 'live' telecasts will bring more demands which is good. These boys are used to live matches and it will raise their confidence levels."

Balagumaran added: "It's a good thing for the S-League. I know my players, especially the younger ones, are very excited about it as people in Malaysia and Brunei will now get to see them.

"It's given them that extra lift, even in training, and they have been pushing the senior players very hard for places which is good."

The tie-up is expected to see about 545,000 households and almost 2.2 million mobile subscribers here with StarHub following this season's S-League matches on TV, mobile and online platforms.

And Jalan Besar stadium is expected to be crowded tonight given the reputation of the Harimau Muda team which has nine players from their successful Indonesia SEA Games outing last year.

Harimau Muda captain Mahali Jasuli added: "It will give us added motivation to do well, because now fans back home in Malaysia can see how we're performing, and we can show them what we're capable of."

But making a winning start to the season is what Ong and Balagumaran really want.

However, Gombak United will be without forward Hafiz Rahim who is out with a broken metatarsal while the visitors will be missing defender Shahrul Saad and forward Izzat Faris Ramlan through injury.

On Sunday, Harimau Muda saw their hopes of reaching this year's London Olympics disappear after a 2-1 loss to Bahrain's under-23 side in Manama. But Ong remained unperturbed.

"Frankly, I'm not really familiar with the clubs here. I only know Gombak by their name, and checked out their website and heard they have a new coach," he said.

"All teams look to start on a good note, I'm looking at three points but it will be tough because we're the only team without any foreign players.

"It takes a few matches to see who's more consistent. For me, the most important thing is to try and work hard and get used to teams in the competition."

Better crowds expected at S-League matches for new season

Source

SINGAPORE - The average turnout of 957 spectators per match at the Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League last year was an all-time low, but the figures are expected to improve for the 2012 season.

S-League chief executive officer Lim Chin told Today during yesterday's announcement of leading telco StarHub and broadcaster ESPN STAR Sports as the official broadcast partners of the S-League in a one-year deal, that they are looking at working towards a target of above 2,000 to about 2,500 per match.

"We looked at the crowd figures over the years since the inception of the S-League in 1996 and felt this is a possible target for us to try to reach. It's not easy, but if the clubs put in enough effort and the S-League pools its resources together, I'm sure we can reach this target," he said.

And the partnership with StarHub and ESPN STAR Sports is one of the key initiatives of S-League Version 2.0 - a blueprint unveiled last month to improve the S-League - to help bring fans back to the stadiums to watch the S-League and local cup competitions.

StarHub also re-affirmed its support of Singapore football by coming in as title sponsor of the StarHub League Cup.

Under the agreement, StarHub will broadcast 30 "live" matches per week on SuperSports Arena (StarHub TV Channel 112 and 201), 26 of which are league, and the remaining four in the StarHub League Cup and possibly the RHB Singapore Cup. The "live" games in Brunei and Malaysia will be shown by Astro Arena.

All "live" S-League games are on Thursdays at the Jalan Besar Stadium, and can also be viewed on StarHub's online and mobile platforms.

The first "live" match is tonight's opening 2012 S-League fixture between Gombak United and Harimau Muda at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

ESPN STAR Sports will also produce and broadcast a 30-minute highlight show across major STAR Sports networks across 12 countries every Monday at 10pm from Feb 13.

It will also be shown on StarHub networks every Monday at 9.30pm, while Astro Arena will do likewise in Malaysia and Brunei.

Test for S-League Version 2.0 starts tonight FAS deserve praise for changes made to increase fan turnout, but let's continue to tinker if necessary

Source

The neatly-trimmed grass gleams green right now. The freshly painted lines are talcum white.

Opening day of any football league competition always generates a buzz.

Optimism fills the air even though the level of beauty of Pele's game differs wildly all over the world.

The fans bristle impatiently to roar their heroes on.

Every team starts at zero, the players are fit, there are shiny new jerseys to pull on, confidence is high, the giants target trophies, the smaller clubs eye modest gains, no one even contemplates the wooden spoon.

The strikers' dream of scoring dream goals, the defenders vow to play with the cool panache of Bobby Moore, England's 1966 World Cup winning captain, excited rookies offer up prayers of thanks.

The players and coaches of four S-League teams will wake up today with an extra bounce in their step.

The 2012 Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League season kicks off tonight, I hope it is the start of its climb back up.

After introducing a slew of changes over the last few months, the 17th season of the competition has been christened Version 2.0 by Football Association of Singapore (FAS) president Zainudin Nordin.

The biggest goal is to increase fan turnout at matches.

Tonight, Gombak United take on Malaysia's Harimau Muda in the "live" match at Jalan Besar Stadium, and a much-changed Hougang United entertain Tanjong Pagar United.

New S-League CEO Lim Chin has targeted an average of between 2,000 to 2,500 fans and all eyes will be on the numbers at both stadiums.

It will also be crucial that all four teams - and the nine others in the competition - serve up football with enough promise to suggest the S-League is on the right path.

The LionsXII have stirred excitement among the fans here with their ongoing adventure in the Malaysian Super League.

While many criticised the move because they felt it would sound the death knell of the S-League, I felt it could spark renewed interest in local football and it will be interesting to see if there is a positive spinoff here.

A successful S-League is crucial because it is the bread and butter of Singapore football. It has been the main production line of talent for the national team and the Lions will continue to lean heavily on it.

Over the last few seasons, the average turnout for an S-League match has dipped, even going below the 1,000 mark. The stars disappeared, the quality of play stagnated and so many fans grew disillusioned.

Potential sponsors stayed away, and local clubs eventually took the unprecedented step of joining forces to ask the FAS for more seed money.

Zainudin and his team deserve credit for listening.

Clubs now have more seed money. It is easier for a club to sign a marquee foreign footballer and the weekly schedule has been trimmed to three match days.

Yesterday, the S-League announced a new TV deal and the "live" game every week will now be seen in Singapore, across the Causeway and in Brunei.

The 2012 S-League season will be showcased on a grander stage, the clubs and their players and coaches, along with the sponsors, have never had it so good.

As the season unfolds, I would urge Lim Chin and his team to continue to make tweaks where they see fit.

Over the past few seasons the FAS have flown in a batch of footballers during pre-season to help clubs in their bid to sign foreign players, perhaps they can do so during the mid-season transfer window.

The effort must continue to marry potential sponsors with smaller clubs. Pump more money in to help the smaller clubs if need be. And clubs also need to do their part and tap exciting foreigners, insist on player fitness and discipline.

Much of the news in the build-up to the 2012 season left the FAS and the S-League beleaguered.

Many questions marks remain over the entire episode involving French club Etoile FC. I am puzzled how the FAS could have provided a club already in debt a S$90,000 advance of their annual subsidy. The 2010 champions have pulled out this year and the FAS have yet to get the money back.

I am also mystified how former Etoile chairman Johan Gouttefangeas could have been named S-League deputy CEO when he left the club in debt.

The FAS and the new S-League team led by Lim Chin need to be more forthcoming over their decision-making process.

Right now, though, it is time to talk football. The sweet smell of freshly-cut grass hangs heavy in the air.

I hope fans of Singapore's No 1 sport catch the whiff and Version 2.0 of the S-League does enough to begin to capture their imagination.

S-League teams with StarHub and ESPN to broadcast matches live

Source

The S-League has inked a one-year deal with StarHub and ESPN Star Sports to broadcast matches of the 2012 Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League season.

The deal will see 30 matches telecast "live" on StarHub TV Channel 112 and 201 every Thursday at 7.30 pm, starting with a 15-minute preview show before kick-off.

Of these, 26 are from the S-League, and the remaining four from the Starhub League Cup.

The first "live" match will be Thursday's opening S-League match between Gombak United and Harimau Muda of Malaysia at the Jalan Besar Stadium at 7.30pm.

Fans can view the games on StarHub's TV, online and mobile platforms.

The collaboration is part of S-League Version 2.0 to improve Singapore's premier domestic football competition, which will also see the S-League matches shown "live" overseas in Malaysia and Brunei, which S-League CEO Lim Chin believes will boost the S-League's regional appeal.

ESPN Star Sports will also broadcast a 30-minute highlight show across major STAR Sports networks covering 12 countries every Monday at 10pm from Feb 13.

The highights show will also be shown on StarHub, as well as on Astro Arena in Malaysia and Brunei.

Selangor 1 LionsXII 1

Source

by alywin chew
The LionsXII got off to a slow start against old rivals Selangor and the Malaysian side dominated heavily with their passing in the early stages of the game. However, LionsXII defender Baihakki Khaizan produced his side's best chance on 18 minutes.

Saiful Esah crossed into the penalty area from a freekick and Baihakki latched onto the ball, unleashing a shot that was blocked and subsequently cleared to safety by the organised Selangor defence.

Selangor's Azidan Sarudin then tested LionsXII goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud with a good long range effort, but the Singaporean youngster did well to save.

The Singapore side grew in confidence towards the end of the first half, holding onto possession with intricate passing moves and their efforts paid off in the 44th minute when captain Shahril Ishak shrugged off his defenders in the area to create space before slamming home from point blank range.

The goal immediately stirred the Selangor team and the hosts took just over a minute to equalise with a brilliant shot by Govandar Gurusamy that was delivered with so much power Izwan was still rooted to the spot when the ball flew into the top corner.

The second half started off at a frenetic pace and Selangor came close to scoring in the 53rd min. Captain Safiq Rahim burst into the penalty area unchallenged and forced a good save from Izwan. The rebound fell to Amri Yahyah who miscued the ball and sent it wide.

The LionsXII provided little resistance after the restart and Selangor took the opportunity to pile on even more pressure down the flanks but their crosses were largely poor and ineffective.

Sufian Anuar came on for Agu Casmir in the 67th min and he came close to scoring the LionsXII's best chance in the second half with a tame header that Selangor goalkeeper Norazlan Razali easily smothered.

Towards the end of the match, the LionsXII defended in numbers and frustrated a Selangor side which looked desperate for the winner with numerous wayward shots from range.

Shahril was substituted in injury time to run the clock down as Sevki Sha'ban came on. Almost immediately, Selangor's Amri found himself in the area with the last chance of the game but he was quickly swarmed by Singaporean defenders.

In the end, the LionsXII were rewarded for their solid defence with a point, but based on a second half performance which saw them on their back foot most of the time, their attack left much to be desired.

Midfielder Firdaus agonises over footballing future

Source

Heartbroken. Frustrated. And, above all, helpless.

LionsXII midfielder Firdaus Kasman has been wrestling with these conflicting emotions since being detained by the police for alleged theft and his subsequent suspension from all footballing activities by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) for drinking.

When The Straits Times visited him on Tuesday, the 24-year-old looked lost - pacing listlessly at the void deck of his block and talking on his phone.

'I know myself. I'm not the type to go around creating trouble or wreaking havoc,' he said. 'I was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. It was unfortunate this had to happen to me - I'm really sorry for this whole mess.'

When he first received an offer to join the LionsXII, he was apprehensive about first-team opportunities, said the lean, well-muscled player.

But the attack-minded midfielder has since earned the praise of coach V. Sundramoorthy for his off-the-ball movement and good training attitude, securing a starting slot in the wake of injuries to several key players. And he was just beginning to harvest the rewards of his hard work.

But his world collapsed on him at Clarke Quay late last Saturday, just four days before the LionsXII's big game against fierce rivals Selangor in Kuala Lumpur.

In a detailed FAS statement issued on Monday night, Firdaus claimed he was intoxicated and his friend had to help him to the toilet.

Along the way, the friend mistakenly picked up a stranger's handbag that he thought belonged to Firdaus' fiancee. The pair were then hauled in and grilled by the police.

It is understood Firdaus was taken into custody at about 3am on Sunday and questioned for almost 17 hours.

According to the player, the hours passed by in a blur.

He said: 'My phone was taken from me, although I kept asking if I could make a call so I could inform the team.'

He was forced to miss training on Sunday, leaving officials and his teammates clueless over his whereabouts.

'I'm heartbroken lah. I spent most of my time thinking about my footballing future and what's going to happen to me,' he said.

The FAS explained on Monday that it had suspended the player on the grounds that he had breached the players' code of conduct - which prohibits the consumption of alcohol at any time.

Firdaus has since apologised for breaching the code but denied any involvement in any offence.

The FAS is due to conduct a separate inquiry from the ongoing police investigations and has not ruled out terminating the player's contract if he is found guilty.

Members of the football fraternity who have worked with Firdaus described him as a driven player who was good and obedient.

The news came as a 'big shock' to Steven Tan, the player's coach when he won the S-League title with Tampines Rovers last year. 'Firdaus never gave me any trouble,' Tan added.

Courts Young Lions coach Robin Chitrakar, who was assistant coach of Singapore's Under-23 team at the SEA Games last November, recalled how his charge was determined to play despite being struck down by food poisoning.

For now, Firdaus can only endure an agonising wait to learn his fate as the FAS has yet to decide on a date for the hearing.

'I think I'll go for a run now - that's all I can do to clear my mind and keep fit,' he said.

Batistuta to partner Fandi at Johor? State's crown prince says Argentinian great will soon arrive in M'sia to discuss terms

Source

SINGAPORE - In a stunning development, Johor crown prince Ismail Sultan Ibrahim revealed in his Twitter account yesterday that Argentina legend Gabriel Batistuta could join the state's Malaysian Premier League (MPL) side and work with former Singapore star Fandi Ahmad.

According to Ismail, who is also the Johor FA president, Batistuta will arrive in Johor soon to hold talks with him and Fandi.

Batistuta, who turned 43 a week ago, is Argentina's record all-time leading scorer with 56 goals from 78 appearances during an 11-year international career that included appearances at three World Cups and two Copa America triumphs in 1991 and 1993.

He started his footballing life in his native Argentina, turning out for River Plate and Boca Juniors in a professional career that spanned almost two decades from 1988 to 2005.

But it was in Italy that he rose to global prominence, first in a nine-year spell with Serie A side Fiorentina, before he moved to Roma and won the Scudetto in 2001.

Batistuta retired in 2005 after a spell with Qatari side Al Arabi.

Should he agree terms with Johor, Ismail said the Argentine will collaborate with Johor FA technical adviser and team manager Fandi on strengthening the state team. He said he is confident that Batistuta will also spur young local Johor players to improve their game.

The crown prince signed Fandi to his current positions on a three-year deal earlier this month.

Johor FA are currently fifth in the 12-strong MPL standings with nine points after six matches, four points behind leaders Pahang, who beat them 2-0 last night in Temerloh. The MPL is Malaysia's second division, below the Super League which features Singapore's LionsXII team.

FAS trying to recover S$90,000 from Etoile Disgruntled players call for FAS probe into 2012 subsidy disbursed to French club

Source

SINGAPORE - Struggling to pay the players and coaches, Etoile FC chairman Hicham Moudden asked the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) for money twice. But he was only successful the first time, receiving S$90,000.

The French club, backed by sports marketing company Michezo Group, received the money in the last week of November last year as part payment given in advance out of their 2012 subsidy entitlement.

FAS general secretary Winston Lee confirmed yesterday granting Etoile's request and told Today this is not the first time the association has helped clubs.

He added it was also disbursed in the belief Etoile would be among the 14 teams competing in the 2012 Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League, which kicks off tomorrow.

"Michezo stood guarantor for the money and they also showed us their plans and told us they had a sponsor for this year's S-League," said Mr Lee. "We are making plans to recover the subsidy."

But Today also understands that on Jan 2, Mr Moudden made a further demand of S$500,000 from the FAS, a pre-condition for Etoile to compete in the S-League this year.

He said it would be used to pay off the club's debts, with a commitment first to Michezo, of which the Moroccan-German businessman is also the chairman and founder.

If they quit, Mr Moudden added, they will keep the club and continue operating Etoile's centre of excellence and outreach programmes.

Their request was rejected by the FAS and in mid-January the club withdrew from the S-League.

The club's players are also fuming over the subsidy Etoile received and sent an email to the FAS on Monday, requesting an official enquiry into how the club spent the money. Mr Lee said the FAS is looking into the matter.

The 22 players, seven of whom remain in Singapore, and two coaches are still owed at least three months wages from November, estimated at around S$150,0000 in total, and were promised payment by Mr Moudden the moment the club received funds.

It has left their players here without employment and struggling to get by with the help of friends. They said they have a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Manpower this week.

With only S$40 left in his pocket and skipping meals to stretch it for as long as possible, the erstwhile assistant coach of the club, Mr David Moubon, is a bitter man.

He is also without an air ticket to return home to France and told Today: "I am having sleepless nights. Hicham and Michezo made a lot of promises and they have stopped answering our calls. I trusted them but now I feel stupid."

Michezo also sponsored Tanjong Pagar last season but has yet to pay a significant amount of the S$250,000 promised to the club.

In December it also organised a tennis exhibition featuring top-ranked women players including Samantha Stosur and Agnieszka Radwanska but it failed to pull in the crowds.

EXCLUSIVE: 'He's a Tampines boy' - Stags coach Steven Tan on Noh Alam Shah

Source

The former Singapore international is now a free agent after his resignation from Arema FC and Tan has left the door open for him to return to his former club
Noh Alam Sah - Arema

Noh Alam Shah who announced his departure from Indonesian club Arema FC over the weekend, is now one of the hottest free-agents in South East Asian football.

The prolific forward was with Tampines Rovers from 2003 to 2009 in a highly successful spell that brought the club multiple S.League and Singapore Cup titles as well as the now defunct ASEAN Club Championship.

A brief spell in Malaysia with PDRM FA in 2008 followed, at the end of a 7-month playing ban imposed on him after an incident in the Singapore Cup final in 2007 when Noh Alam attacked Singapore Armed Forces defender and fellow Singapore international, Daniel Bennett.

The forward then departed for Arema FC in 2009 after stating that poor attendances at S.League matches failed to motivate him.

Steven Tan, the current Tampines coach, was fully aware of Noh Alam's status in the club when Goal.com spoke to him and seemed ready to take the forward back.

"He's a Tampines boy!" said Tan.

"Of course, he's always welcome back."

But the former Singapore international also stated that they have yet to get in touch with the player though Chairman Teo Hock Seng has been in regular contact.

"No we haven't heard from him yet," explained the Stags coach

"We only heard he resigned from Arema today.

"And we haven't been in touch with him, but he calls my boss [Teo] regularly. They speak quite often."

Tan also conceded that Noh Alam may eventually opt for a team away from Singapore.

"The transfer window is closing soon too, on March 3," he noted, on the difficulty that may arise should the player wish to sign for Tampines. Noh Alam had also previously stated that the mandatory beep test, which every prospective player had to pass, was one of the reasons for his decision to leave Singapore football.

"I think he might go to another club in Indonesia or play in Malaysia even."

The registration deadline for signing foreign players in the Malaysian Super League is February 13, having been recently extended.

LionsXII to ring changes

Source

SINGAPORE - A Singapore-Selangor fixture of the past years would have thrown up a close encounter and displaying an array of attacking talent the envy of all. Names like Mokhtar Dahari, Zainal Abidin Hassan, Azman Adnan on one end with Dollah Kassim, Quah Kim Song and Fandi Ahmad on the other.

Separated by a single point in the Malaysian Super League (MSL) table, the two teams meet tomorrow at the Bukit Jalil Stadium but under different circumstances.

Selangor will parade their latest signing, former Croatian international striker Bosko Balanban in their attempt to lift their fortunes. V Sundramoorthy's LionsXII side have been struggling to find goals too, managing just four to Selangor's five.

But things could change for the LionsXII in March when the transfer window opens on April 2.

"There will be some changes in the squad. We will look to beef up the squad when the transfer window opens. The focus will be on attacking, but at the moment, there aren't many local attackers around," assistant coach Kadir Yahaya told Today.

"It's still early in the season, but some have achieved good marks, others still need more time, and some are struggling."

But other problems have also plagued the 29-man LionsXII squad. Today understands that the trio of Praveen Guanasagaran, Izzdin Shafiq and Gabriel Quak have not been able to train regularly with the team due to National Service commitments, with others reporting for training late, even unable to travel for away games due to the same reasons.

Injuries to Khairul Amri, Khairul Nizam, Shahdan Sulaiman and Safuwan Baharudin have also hit the team.

Yesterday's training session saw only 21 players take part in full training, not enough for a full two-sided game.

Today understands LionsXII officials have approached S-League clubs for their players, but there has been some resistance from both clubs and players.

Said Kadir: "Based on performances, injuries and National Service commitments, there will need to be changes, and we will inform the players involved soon."

S-League jumps on regional airwaves 'Live' telecast in Malaysia and Brunei a tremendous breakthrough, says Lim

Source

SINGAPORE - Regular matchdays, a two-round format and new foreign teams in Malaysia's Harimau Muda and Brunei side DPMM FC, but changes in domestic football, christened S-League version 2.0, have still to set pulses racing.

But in a move that will surely raise the profile of a league going into its 17th year when it kicks off in two days, Today has come to learn that the 2012 season will be broadcast "live" by Malaysian television company Astro in Malaysia as well as Brunei, starting with Harimau Muda's opening game against Gombak United this Thursday.

Speaking to Today, S-League chief executive officer Lim Chin said: "It is a tremendous breakthrough for us that Astro has decided to telecast our games 'live' in Malaysia and Brunei.

"It will help our popularity to grow well beyond our shores to a wider audience."

And Lim expects the spillover effects from this to be felt sooner rather than later.

"This will enable us to reach out to footballers who might want to come and play here, and this might even help us in terms of luring in sponsors, who will get a wider audience across the region," he said.

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) have already decided on the company that will be in charge of the production of S-League games as well as the cable television company that will broadcast the matches, with that announcement expected to take place tomorrow.

Similar to the LionsXII Malaysian Super League matches, Today understands that S-League games will also be available on free-to-air television, with a weekly magazine show in the pipeline as well.

Lim believes this broadcast arrangement will be a viable testing ground for the ASEAN Super League (ASL) - a competition featuring teams from across the region in a combined league similar to its basketball cousin, the ASEAN Basketball League - that is expected to take shape within the next few years.

"The S-League this year is a smaller scale concept of the ASL, with teams from different countries travelling across the region to play matches. And the fact that broadcasting it regionally is possible, with the promotions and sponsorships that we expect to achieve, augurs well for the ASL, should it materialise," said Lim.

"The broadcaster will be tracking viewership numbers to see just how well the matches are being received, and we will endeavour to keep up production and broadcast standards too."

But if Lim and his team have their way, S-League version 2.0 will continue to see additional revisions, like an All-Star game sometime in June, that Lim hopes will see as much excitement surrounding it as last Sunday's Charity Shield fixture between Tampines Rovers and Home United.

"The Charity Shield went well, and we want to keep things vibrant in a league that will be shorter this year (after the format has been changed from a three-round format to a two-round system). The All-Star game is one idea that has been mooted, but things are still fluid now," said Lim.

The match could feature a team made up of players from clubs hailing from the Eastern side of the island against their counterparts from the West, or even a local All-Star team against an S-League foreign legion side.

But the central idea remains to keep the buzz around the S-League going.

Said Lim: "We're still in the early stages of things and it is still just an idea right now, but I like the idea of bringing everyone together again at the Jalan Besar Stadium."

LionsXII midfielder suspended for breach of conduct

Source

SINGAPORE - LionsXII midfielder Firdaus Kasman has been suspended indefinitely by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) following a birthday outing last Saturday, which ended in the police detaining the 24-year-old and a friend.

The FAS in a statement released last night said that Firdaus has been suspended because he has breached its Code of Conduct & Professional Ethics, which specifically prohibits the consumption of alcohol at any time.

The FAS condemned the player's action, which they deemed irresponsible, and will decide on the appropriate action to be taken after a disciplinary committee hearing.

Meanwhile, Firdaus and his unnamed childhood friend are also under investigation by the police for an incident, in which the friend had allegedly picked up a lady's handbag, while believing it to belong to Firdaus' fiancee.

The incident took place while the friend was helping Firdaus to the toilet as the footballer felt like vomiting. Subsequently, the police who was called in detained the two of them.

The police detention had resulted in Firdaus missing training on Sunday.

Firdaus has issued an apology expressing regret for his actions and his willingness to accept the pending sanctions from the FAS disciplinary committee.
