Source

  Fandi Ahmad
Former national striker Fandi Ahmad has launched his Football Academy to support local football and the initiative could get some support from the community.

Six Members of Parliament, including Teo Ser Luck who was Guest-of-Honour, showed their support by donning jerseys and boots to play in a celebrity game against Fandi and other ex-internationals like Malek Awab and Rafi Ali.

Close to 100 recruits aged between seven and 16 years old have signed up at the Academy at SAFRA Tampines.

While it costs S$330 for a 12 week programme, kids from poor families could get a leg up. A subsidy is being proposed.

Mr Teo said: "These kids can be be given a chance if they can be referred some of their organisation like grassroots organisations or even CDC, like my CDC to consider how we can partner together to help some of these children."

800 participants showed up to show their support for the inaugural Religious Harmony Cup and a Youth challenge tournament.

A total of 32 teams competed in the inaugural Religious Harmony Cup and there are plans to grow the tournament and make it an annual event.

Fandi said: "There are various religious groups are here, even the Jewish are here. So that's great for Singapore you can see the harmony and I hope there is more tournaments like this."

The inaugural Religious Harmony Cup 2011, was won by Braca Vita Lotus Feet. A Hindu organisation, Braca beat Spiritus United, a Catholic church team, by a single goal.

The Football Association of Singapore, which has sanctioned this event, commended Fandi for promoting grassroots football and grooming youngsters. The Association has also not ruled out the possibility of working with the footballer in other areas of football development.
