Hougang 1 M'sian Young Tigers 0 (aet)
SINGAPORE - There has been a dark cloud hanging over Hougang Stadium since the May 23 pre-match altercation with Etoile FC saw the club indefinitely suspended from the S-League.
But under-fire Hougang United responded well in their first competitive fixture in more than two weeks, beating Malaysia's Young Tigers 1-0 after extra-time in the preliminary round of the 2011 RHB Singapore Cup last night.
Mamadou Diallo scored five minutes into the first period of extra-time, settling Hougang nerves after the Cheetahs spurned several good chances in regulation time.
"The rescheduled fixtures did make us lose some momentum ... but I'm happy with the win. It's important for morale," said Hougang coach Aide Iskandar.
Hougang had their suspension lifted only for this fixture, and with the Football Association of Singapore disciplinary committee (DC) due to sit for a third time on June 16, the club and some of their players could face some tough sanctions.
The trio of Hasrin Jailani, Shariff Samat and Fathi Yunos played no part in the game, and are still suspended until the DC comes to a decision.
Malaysia's Young Tigers - made up of 17 and 18-year-olds - gave a good account of themselves and their coach Ismail Ibrahim was still smiling in defeat.
"I'm happy with the performance ... this was good exposure in preparation for the AFC under-19 tournament later this year," he said.
Hougang moved into the last eight of the competition and will face the winners of the Pattaya United (Thailand) and Okkthar United (Myanmar) clash. SHAMIR OSMAN
