These Cubs have got FIFA singing their praises

By Tan Yo-Hinn, TODAY | Posted: 11 March 2011 0719 hrs

Football's world body FIFA have given hosts Singapore a glowing assessment for their bronze medal showing in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games boys' under-15 competition.

They also singled out midfielders Ammirul Mazlan, Mohd Hanafi Akbar and Jonathan Tan and forward Muhaimin Suhaimi for their outstanding performance.

In a 125-page report on the Games' football tournament for boys and girls, FIFA described the Cubs as a strong, hardworking side with a disciplined and well-organised defence, and patient build-up through the midfield and flanks.

They added that the boys, coached by former Lions defender Kadir Yahaya, possessed good individual skills and combination play, mental strength, attitude and excellent team spirit.

The Cubs' only blot was their 2-0 semi-final loss to Haiti, where the report said "Singapore seemed to be burdened by the weight of expectations and were never able to play their usual game".

Some 42,585 fans, or an average of 3,871 per match, watched the boys' competition, which was won by Bolivia, at the Jalan Besar Stadium. The Cubs' clash with Haiti attracted the biggest crowd - 6,000. - TODAY
