LionsXII set to add Baihakki to 28-man roster

He has been out in football purgatory after the breakaway Indonesian Premier League (LPI) closed their doors midway through the first season in May this year.

He decided to train with S-League side Hougang United to stay fit after cancelling his big-money contract with LPI's Medan Chiefs, and his work looks to have paid off.

Today understands that Baihakki Khaizan (picture) is poised to sign with LionsXII, the Singapore side that will play in Malaysia's domestic football competitions next year.

Speaking to Today after putting his charges through their paces at the Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday, LionsXII coach V Sundramoorthy confirmed his interest in the 27-year-old central defender, who has been frozen out of the national team after last year's ill-fated AFF Suzuki Cup campaign.

"We are lacking central defenders, and if we can get him, it will strengthen the team. If Baihakki is available and willing, why not," said Sundram.

Safuwan Baharudin, Sevki Sha'ban, Shahir Hamzah and Madhu Mohana can all play in central defence, with Sundram hinting that midfield star Hariss Harun could also be deployed in that position.

If he does sign and rediscovers his form, former Lions star Baihakki could free up Hariss to play in the engine room.

LionsXII midfielder Isa Halim hopes Baihakki will sign for the team, which kicks off its campaign in the Malaysian Super League next month.

He said: "We know he's a good player, he's been there and done that with the national team. He's got experience and he still has quality. "If he comes in and works hard, he will be an asset to the team for sure."
