SINGAPORE, 25 June 2011: The NFA Singapore U-15s were unable to go through to the finals of the Lion City Cup after suffering a 3-0 loss to CR Flamengo U-15 at Jalan Besar Stadium.

CR Flamengo went into the game with all guns blazing as they were looking to book a spot in the Lion City Cup Finals. Both sides spared no time in getting into attack mode as the fans were treated to some end-to-end action.

However, The Brazilians took the lead through Jorge Macro in the 39th minute as the Cubs failed to close down the advancing striker. The game continued to be a treat for fans with both sides showing off some nifty footwork. The first half came to a close with the score line unchanged.

Coming into the second half with a one-goal lead, CR Flamengo surged forward seeking to extend their lead and were almost successful in doing so but the Singapore defence stood tall and mighty.

The Cubs fought on without showing any signs of pressure and communicating well with each other. They were however unlucky to concede an own goal whilst trying to clearing a cross into the penalty area.

Capitalising on the momentum the second goal created, CR Flamengo poured forward to extend their lead and were duly rewarded with it in the 80th minute. No.10 Caio Rangel showcased the samba skills Brazilians are renowned for, as he broke down the Cubs’ defence before slotting the ball into the net.

Herson Pinheiro who had an excellent game throughout was sent off in the 84th minute after he was adjudged to have gone in for a rough tackle.

Despite the defeat, NFA Singapore United U-15 coach, Dejan Gulscevic said he was pleased that the players were able to perform to their ability and were fighting till the end of the game.

He added “We were up against a team that was stronger and more technically advanced and faster than us. But we showed that we could still stick to out gameplan and be able to enforce our passing game.”

Singapore NFA U-15 defender, Ehvin Sasidharan, was quick to add, “The team will give its 100% for every game, no matter what the result. That’s the most important lesson I have learned with this team.”

CR Flamengo U-15 Coach, Celso Martins said: “This game, we truly showed how we play beautiful football and that is how we play in Brazil too. Singapore football is headed in the right direction and they have a bright future ahead of them.”

He however was very upset about the red card that Herson Pinheiro was awarded, saying “The official was unfair in awarding the red card to Pinheiro so late into the game. This boy who has flown three thousand miles will now not be able to play in the final.”
