Angry Juventus will only be back if there are European referees

Source

Jun 27, 2011 SINGAPORE - They were knocked out in agonising fashion in the semi-finals, a controversial refereeing decision to allow a missed Singapore penalty to be retaken proving decisive.

Last night, questionable refereeing again plagued Juventus, a controversial penalty and a questionable sending off taking the gloss off the Singapore under-15s' 4-0 victory in the bronze-medal playoff at the 23rd Canon Lion City Cup.

"Do you think that is fair? Do you think you will teach 15-year-olds anything letting them win like that," Juventus manager Ricardo Cavallari blasted, after the match.

"Every effort you make to improve your football will be ruined by your referees," he insisted, angrily. "If you call referees from Spain, Germany and England, we will come back (for next year's edition of the tourney)."

Cavallari asserted that the tackle that led to the 84th minute penalty was clean. And he insisted referee Muhd Yazeen's sending off of Fabio Gili the six minutes after half-time stemmed from him flashing an earlier yellow card that should have gone to Stefano Antezza, instead.

"We came here to learn, and I now I haven't got words for my players ... I don't know what answer I will get when I ask them what they've learnt from here," he said.

Added Juventus coach Attila Malfatti: "We would like to win in the right way and even lose in the right way; besides education of players, in a tournament like this, you have to give all the same possibilities (chance to win), but they didn't give that to us."

While the tournament has captured the imagination of local fans and served up exciting action and great skill, the performances of local referees in the tournament have irked the foreign teams.

Brazilian officials from Flamengo had said earlier in the week that the style of refereeing here took a bit of getting used to.

Tongue-in-cheek, Cavallari added: "Maybe you'd want to come to Italy for a tournament."
